Amsterdam
“I was so lucky to be there when all of the canals froze over for what was the first time in 5 years. It was such a surreal experience to be standing on the canals surrounded by people enjoying themselves on their home-made skates.”
Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a well-known and popular location for many people from the UK; whether it’s just a weekend trip or a longer stay. I’ve been a handful of times myself and each trip was between 2-4 days, however each has been very different as Amsterdam has so many things to offer!
Notoriously known for its cafés and the red light district, Amsterdam is much more than that. Yes those attractions are fun and a great laugh if that’s the kind of thing you are after, but overall, Amsterdam is an amazing city, with beautiful canals, romantic locations, and thriving with history and culture as can be seen by the huge number of museums in the city.
As I’ve referred to in some of my other blogs, I love a hop on-hop off open top bus tour, and Amsterdam, like many cities around the world, offers one of these. I must have done this tour 2 or 3 times over the years and there is still so much I haven’t seen. Just some of the many highlights you can see on a visit to Amsterdam are; The Anne Frank Museum, The Ice Bar, The Heineken Experience, Vondelpark, and so many more!
On one of my trips, I was so lucky to be there when all of the canals froze over for what was the first time in 5 years. It was such a surreal experience to be standing on the canals surrounded by people enjoying themselves on their home-made skates. On other trips I’ve been to music festivals, club nights and even been fortunate to tour other parts of Holland with a local friend who is a professional singer.
Amsterdam really is a massively versatile place with beautiful attractions as well as crazy nightlife to suit all people.

Improvements: Based on the versatility I really can’t fault Amsterdam, it has something for everyone. Personally, I prefer the warmer climates but it even has the nice warm summers so I can’t complain, and it just wouldn’t be Amsterdam if it wasn’t cold in the winter.
What I’d do differently: It would simply be to visit more museums. I’m a person who loves to appreciate other cultures and constantly expand my knowledge. So the fact that there are still so many museums that I have never been to, I can’t help but feel that I’m missing out!
